Our Work

Every project at the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter has a purpose—making life better for the animals in our care and the people who help them. Whether it’s new enclosures, upgraded medical equipment, or improvements around the shelter, each one helps us give injured and orphaned wildlife the best possible care. From building safe spaces for recovering animals to creating habitats for our education ambassadors, these projects make it possible for us to keep doing what we love most—rescuing, healing, and releasing the wild back into the wild.

Sea Bird Enclosure

Our new Sea Bird Enclosure is in the works—a dedicated space designed for waterfowl in recovery, including pelicans, gannets, loons, and other migratory birds that need room to heal. The enclosure will measure 30 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 15 feet tall, featuring a large pool with moving water so the birds can swim, exercise, and rebuild their strength before release.

Located at the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter and managed by project coordinator Pam Bader, this addition will enhance our ability to care for injured and displaced seabirds, giving them the best chance to return to their natural habitats.

If you’re interested in supporting this project—through materials, funding, or volunteering—we’d love to hear from you. Every bit of help brings us closer to making this vital space a reality for the wildlife we serve.

Education & Mammal
Room Flooring

IMG_0841_edited_edited.jpg

Every corner of our shelter tells a story of care, learning, and second chances. The floors in our Education and Mammal Rooms have seen thousands of tiny feet—both animal and human—pass through them. Over time, that constant activity has taken a toll. Cracks, peeling, and wear have made the space harder to clean and less safe for the people and wildlife who depend on it every day.

We’re ready to replace the flooring with something durable, easy to sanitize, and built to last. This improvement will create a cleaner, safer environment for our animals in recovery and the many students and visitors who come here to learn about wildlife.

Your support can help us take this important step forward. Every donation, no matter the size, brings us closer to a healthier, more welcoming space for education and care.

Wooden Picket Fence

Perimeter Fence

Our perimeter fence is one of the most important safety features on the property. It protects the animals in our care, keeps wildlife from wandering into dangerous areas, and helps ensure that our staff and visitors can move around the shelter safely. After years of weather, storms, and everyday wear, much of the fencing is in need of replacement.

A new, secure fence will strengthen the safety of our facility, reduce the risk of escapes or intrusions, and give our team peace of mind during daily operations. It will also help us maintain compliance with wildlife and safety standards, which are critical for continued rehabilitation and education work.

Your donation toward the perimeter fence project directly supports the protection and well-being of every animal that comes through our doors. Together, we can keep the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter safe and secure for years to come.
